Why is it called Shelios 2011?
The names of the expeditions and our association was created by “merging” the Greek words Selene (Moon) and Helios (Sun), the two bodies that produce the eclipses which are the celestial phenomena most observed. The name Carla Mendoza is in honour of one of adventurers who went to China 2009, who died without being able to fulfil her dream of observing the orthern Liglhts.
Why is it in Greenland?
As explained in the expedition website,
the main objective is to observe the northern lights from the south of Greenland.
Where exactly are you observing from?
The observing, photography and video recording of the northern lights will be done every night that is possible. We shall be moving around, taking all the equipment with us and therefore only the weather could restrict the visibility of the auroras.
When and where will Shelios 2011 start from and which is you itinerary?
Check our expedition
website and you can see the details of the route and the map.
How long will the expedition last?
A total of 10 days,
between the 22nd and 31st of August.
Who are the members of the expedition?
We´ll be a group of around forty people, everybody has their objectives and tasks defined before the expedition: professional and amateur astronomers, researchers, students, teachers, journalists, photographers, etc. Everybody will help out with the communal chores. This is a work trip, but also to be enjoyed… We do what we love!
